Hong Kong - Lee Keung Kee LKK Eggette at Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui (利強記北角雞蛋仔)

利強記北角雞蛋仔 LKK Eggette Hong Kong

Can you figure what monstrosity is this? Brown, swollen boils, raw crispy edges - as unpretty as it looks and sounds - I hereby proclaim it the best street food in Hong Kong. I never knew the English name for this, but now I do - 雞蛋仔 is Eggette, and noone does it better than Lee Keung Kee.

We were walking down the ever busy Nathan Road when we found a snaking queue that stretched across Standard Chartered Bank and Bossini. We were very curious and decided to join in the fun. It can only be for a good thing right, when people are willing to wait patiently in lines?

This was what the long queue was waiting for - fresh 雞蛋仔/eggette at Lee Keung Kee! It costs HKD 16 for a piece, and HKD 30 if you buy two. There were photos of celebrities and stars plastered all over the humble stall attesting to its popularity. There were about 6 to 8 waffles machines at the back that were perpetually working very hard to produce the awesome goodies.

It took us about 10 minutes before we could lay hands on the egg waffles. It was fresh off the busy waffles machines and piping hot. I took the very first 'boil' off the eggette and immediately understood why the locals were crazy over it. It was really crispy on the outside, but all so tender and soft when you bite in. The eggette had such a sweet, eggy fragrance and the browning added a smokiness to it. Lee Keung Kee is really good at what it does!

Lee Keung Kee has a few more outlets across the island, and the branch at Tsim Sha Tsui is definitely the most central one they have in Kowloon Island. Take that 10 minutes and stand patiently in line- you'll be most duly rewarded when you reach the front.
